On July 5th, Theo and Rachael's wedding day, the happy couple chose to honor their love by asking their wedding guests to donate to1 of 5 Durham organizations, including the Durham Literacy Center! Great Human Race

Walk or Run with DLC at the 13th Annual GREAT HUMAN RACE!
Join us on Saturday, March 29 at 9:00am at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park to run or walk 5K around Downtown Durham while raising funds for Durham Literacy Center. The Competitive Race starts at 9:30am, followed by the Non-Competitive Walk at 9:35am.
Now in its 13th year, the Great Human Race is a fundraiser for
Triangle area nonprofits hosted by the Volunteer Center of Durham.
Before the race, walkers and runners collect donations for the
nonprofit of their choice. (This is easier than ever since donors can
now contribute online.) Our goal is to raise $7,000.00.

student, Veleda. For more student stories and AL news please visit our AL blog: http://dlcal.wordpress.comI did not learn how to read in school, but am learning how now. Sometimes I feel
like I won’t make it but I keep going. I look for ways to make things
better for myself but when a person comes along it seems like they look
at me like I don’t know anything, but I do.
I have learned a lot in the past year and am learning how to ask for
help when needed. I am looking to help someone like me make it in
life. School doesn’t help people like me make it in life. They just
pass you by like you are a dog. When I was growing up, my house was not
easy to live in. But I learned life is not easy and you make the best
out of what you are in. I love myself and keep myself first in life and
thank God for every thing in life. I hope people can look for ways to
read and keep reading so people can take us for what we are and not

Li-lan Hsiang Weiss is a nationally and state licensed acupuncturist
and Chinese herbalist. She received a Master in Oriental Medicine from
Southwest Acupuncture College in Santa Fe, NM and an AB from Duke
University. She runs a private practice and a sliding-scale community
acupuncture clinic at Health Touch in Durham. She enjoys treating a
wide variety of conditions, especially musculo-skeletal pain,
infertility, weight loss, anxiety, and depression. Ms. Hsiang Weiss is
fluent in Spanish and Mandarin.

DLC welcomes many new people for Fall 2007. We welcome a new group of Board members, 3 new AmeriCorps(AC) volunteers, and 1 new interim ESOL coordinator! In addition to new staff and board, we have a new flow of tutors (who just completed 12 hours of tutor training!), and students for each of our programs.

Emily in Ecuador

Friday August 17, 2007 is Emily's last day at DLC for the fall. For four months Emily will be on an RTP Rotary sponsored trip to Ecuador! Emily, our spirited ESOL coordinator will be missed. The good news for DLC is that she will be back in Januaury 2008 with a new understanding of the Spanish language as well as a personal experience of what it feels like to be an immigrant in a new country. Both which will lend to her role in ESOL. Emily, DLC wishes you the best of luck, or buenas suerte! In the mean time, stop by and say hello to our Interm ESOL Coordinator, Stephanie.
