Level 1-2
The Body
- Identify parts of the body
- Use possessive adjectives (my, your, his, her, their) correctly in the context of body parts
- Does your head hurt?
- Yes, my head hurts.
- Indicate areas of pain
- Express states of being
- Identify common ailments
- Identify common symptoms
- Identify and read thermometer
- Identify communicable diseases
- Respond to questions about duration and symptoms of illness
Visiting a Doctor
- Practice making appointments
- Cancel and reschedule an appointment
- Ask for a translator
- Communicate a severe allergy or existing medical condition
- Respond to simple oral commands and questions
Visting a Pharmacy
- Identify types of medicines for common ailments
- Discuss difference between prescription and over-the-counter medicines
- Find specific info on Rx labels
- Request prescription refills
Level 3-4

Getting Sick

- A Conversation Book 2 - Vocabulary and activities pertaining to “staying healthy.” pp 87 – 104
- Easy Stories Plus - Story called “Headache Medicine” about woman who goes shopping for headache medicine (p82).
- In the newspaper folder: A little comic strip about getting stitches and a longish article about Mexico’s health minister urging wealthy nations to offer flu aid for poorer ones.

- Heart Health ESL Curriculum Resources - Printable pdf files containing brief guides for presenting topics related to heart disease prevention; divided into guides for "Lower" and "Higher" levels. Each guide includes handouts for students. For example, see:
- Introduction to Heart Health, Lower Level (pdf) - Curriculum guide including a simple, illustrated reading about preventing heart disease and accompanying cloze activity.
Beginner
- Body game similar to musical chairs -- students have partners and try to not be the last one to follow instructions like “hand to knee” (putting hand on partner’s knee), etc.
- Picture Stories for Adult ESL Health Literacy
- East Side literacy has a great little lesson plan about body parts, complete with a labeled and an unlabelled body parts worksheet.
- East Side Literacy also has lesson plan about describing symptoms
- Draw the Monster - practice body part vocabulary by drawing a monster with the number of eyes, arms, legs, etc determined by a roll of the dice
Intermediate / Advanced
- Creative Writing Ideas - ideas for having students write poems and fiction in various formats. Could be used with any theme.
