Objectives
Level 1-2
Medical Histories
- Describe major medical incidents using simple tense:
- I had the measles when I was two years old.
- I had a heart attack when I was 45 years old.
- I broke my leg last year.
- Fill out simplified Medical History forms (there are several examples in the books at Kestrel - see below)
Health Care System
- Compare hospitals, clinics, and doctors' offices -- when is it appropriate to visit each?
- Identify health care agencies/providers available in Durham, including:
- North Carolina Latino Health Resource Center
- UNC's Latino Health Information for Health Care Providers and Patients - links to resources and information about Latino health issues in NC
- Durham Center (a mental health agency)
- Durham County Health Department
- Lincoln Community Health Center
Level 3-4
Objectives for Level 1-2, plus:
Medical Histories
- Fill out realistic Medical History forms (there are several examples in the books at Kestrel - see below)
Health Care System
- Discuss personal experiences with the health care in the US and compare/contrast wtih experiences in native country
- Discuss dental problems and dental hygiene
- Compare different types of health care options and discuss when it is appropriate to visit a clinic, the emergency room, make an appointment with a family doctor, visit a specialist, etc.
- Discuss payment options for hospital and medical bills
- Read and evaluate medical and dental health insurance information
