LEVEL 1-2

OBJECTIVES

Numbers
• Identify numbers 1-60

The Calendar
• Days of the week
• Learn the days of the week
• Identify months, dates, year
• Recite and copy months of the year
• List months and days of week in order
• Differentiate between weekend and weekday
• Note dates on a calendar
• Identify and write #s 1-31
• Identify date in numbers and words (eg. 01/12/02 or January 12th, 2002)

Birthdays
• Identify and write one’s birth date
• Identify classmate’s birthdays

Holidays (optional)
• Identify major holidays, what month they fall in
• Learn expressions/greetings used with various holidays

Seasons
• Identify seasons
• List 4 seasons and which months fall under each
• Identify seasonal activities

Weather
• Identify weather vocabulary
• Use weather vocabulary to describe
• Read temperature on a Fahrenheit thermometer.

RESOURCES
• We have toy clocks you can use to practice telling time
• Lesson Plans from Florida Adult Literacy Task Force on “Time & Money” (we’ll wait to do money until later)

• Discuss traditions of celebrating birthdays
• Learn expressions used with birthdays

• Discuss cultural significance of specific holidays
• Learn expressions/greetings used with various holidays

Seasons
• Discuss seasonal activities

Weather
• Compare weather in different parts of the world
• Interpret authentic weather reports (audio & visual)
• Respond to serious weather conditions based on TV or radio
• Discuss consequences of weather related disasters

Too much material for Level 1?

A couple of people have mentioned that these objectives are a lot to cover, especially for Level 1. I agree.
I think it's more important that you move at a pace that suits the class than that you cover all the suggested material... The objectives are just guidelines, and I'd be shocked if you could get through them all withLevel 1 -- I'm purposely erring on the side of too much material ratherthan too little. Plus, the objectives should be spread out over the entire week (4 classes)... and if that's too fast, let's slow down to 2 weeks per theme.

So let's try starting this time/calendar/weather next week. And we'll stretch it out to 2 weeks if you end up needing to spend a lot of time on the basics -- especially if you need to spend a lot of time on numbers. Really important that they learn numbers thoroughly.
