Objectives
Levels 1-2
Work with Cash objectives first, and do banking objectives if you have time...
- Identify basic units of money
- Count money/ make change
- Request correct change when and incorrect amount is given
- Use ATM machine
- Identify procedure of opening a bank account (savings/checking)
- Identify parts of a check
- Purchase money orders
- Identify simple bank terms
- Learn checking: Write check and keep records
- Endorse check and provide I.D.
Level 3
Objectives for Level 1&2, plus:
- Read a bank statement
- Fill out deposit and withdrawal slips

Books mentioned here have been pulled out and will be on top of the plastic bins this week.
- We have several books with various Forms to copy - Have students practice writing checks, filling out bank account application
- For Level 1: English ASAP - Literacy Level. See Unit 7 (Finances) - Worksheets to help students practice naming coins, writing a check, counting money, making a deposit, etc.
- For Level 1, maybe 2: Survival English: English Through Conversation by Lee Mosteller/Bolvi Paul. Similar worksheets on identifying and counting money. See also the unit on Family for some good review materials.
- For Level 2 or 3: Easy Stories Plus by Ann Gianola, Lesson 3, "The Yardsale", p. 16. Short story with descriptive vocabulary (colors, size) and depiction of bargaining. Includes discussion questions. Preface this story with pre-reading activities; look at the picture together and discuss what seems to be happening; talk about going to yard sales and what goes on there.
- For Levels 1-3: Hands-On English, Vol. 14, No. 4 - Photo story on p. 13 describes shows a man using an ATM machine in a series of photos with captions. For intermediate classes, copy the story and cut it into pieces for students to assemble in order.
- Life Prints: ESL for Adults by Christy M. Newman. Unit 3, "Making Choices About Money."

- Bingo - Review numbers the bingo game in the plastic bins
Games, Activities, Ideas
- Bargaining Game - Use shopping vocabulary to practice buying and selling goods
- Jeopardy: Think of 5 good Jeopardy categories that cover things we've studied so far (Greetings, Weather, Classroom Vocabulary, Families, etc.). Come up with 5 questions for each category (progressively harder, if possible). Create a grid on the board with 5 columns and 6 rows. Label the top row with the names of the categories. In the column beneath each category name, write $100, $200, $300, $400, $500 in each table cell. Divide students into teams. Have the first team select a category and dollar amount (make sure that they say these clearly); ask them the corresponding question. If they get it wrong, allow the other team to answer. Have the teams keep track of the amount of money they've won. Use play money if you prefer, and assign a student to be your Vanna White and distribute it. Deduct money for wrong answers to make things more complex.

- Review months with Months Dice Game - For small classes or to do in pairs
- Tic-Tac-Toe - Use team Tic-Tac-Toe to review vocabulary, have students practice grammatical structures, etc.

- Taking Off: Beginning English by Susan Hancock Fesler and Christy M. Newman. Unit 8 on Weather (p. 94) has some colorful activities to reinforce weather vocabulary and expressions.
