The GED Process
The General Educational Devleopment (GED) diploma is earned by passing individual tests in reading, writing, math, science and social studies. Each test is graded on a scale from 200 to 800. A total score of 2,250 on all five tests is required to achieve a GED. This means that students need to have a minimum average score of 450 per test. All of the tests are made up of multiple choice questions and the writing section also requires an additional written essay.
The GED tests are administered by Durham Technical Community College. Students in a GED program are required to pass a practice test in each subject before being given permission slips to take the offical tests at Durham Tech. A score of 450 or higher on a practice test is required to receive a permission slip for that subject. There is a one time fee of $7.50 which must be paid to Durham Tech before taking the GED tests.
Using a combination of paid instructors and volunteer tutors, the Teen Career Academy provides instruction in the five GED subjects. Passing the GED requires dedication, rigorous effort, and steady attendance and completion of course work. Due to the high volume of interested students, the TCA adheres to a strict attendance and disciplinary policy so that students with excessive absences and behavioural problems may be dismissed in order to provide space for new students.
