From the DLC Executive Director, Lizzie Ellis-Furlong:
Last month I celebrated my 10th anniversary as Executive Director of the Durham Literacy Center! As I reflect on the past decade and the remarkable journey we’ve been on, I share the bittersweet news of my resignation, effective February 2025.
I am committed to ensuring a smooth transition for the next Executive Director as the success of the organization is so close to my heart. It’s extremely important for the DLC to grow and flourish upon my departure and I will do everything in my power to tee the organization up for success over the next few months.
I am very proud of my 10 years as the leader of this fantastic and highly impactful organization. Some may know that I was also on staff for 5 years from 2001 to 2006 and, over the cumulative 15 years, I can say with certainty that I did my very best and gave it my all. A new leader will bring fresh ideas and energy that are needed to guide the organization through our new 3-year Strategic Plan and pick up the proverbial ball.
Furthermore, next year will mark the Durham Literacy Center’s 40th anniversary and my successor will have the great fortune of joining the organization in celebration!
We want the DLC to grow and flourish upon my departure and ask for two things from you:
Share the job posting with good prospects and encourage them to apply. The job posting can be found here.
Save-the-date for Giving Tuesday on December 3rd and consider making a donation to the Director’s Discretionary Fund that day or anytime during the giving season.
Serving our students and facilitating their success has fueled me over the years. I’m sure you feel the same. It has been a privilege to work with hundreds of volunteers, individual donors, public and private grant funders, business sponsors, and many, many partners. Last, but certainly not least, I’m lucky to work with our dedicated staff and board members – their drive to make a difference in the lives of many is unmatched.
Many thanks to you and I hope to see you in the next few months.
With gratitude,
Lizzie Ellis-Furlong
Executive Director
